07/08/2019
Toronto (August 7, 2019) – The Cherry Street Bridge is currently out of service and locked in a lifted position due to a mechanical/electrical failure experienced on August 1, 2019. Traffic is being re-routed along Lakeshore Boulevard East to the Don Roadway, which connects with Cherry Street via Villiers Street.
The Cherry Street Bridge is owned by the City of Toronto. the Toronto Port Authority is contracted to lift and lower the bridge as required to facilitate marine traffic.
The City of Toronto and the Toronto Port Authority are working collaboratively to develop a plan to safely lower the bridge, which includes engaging engineers who specialize in bascule lift bridges of this nature. Once the bridge is safely lowered repair work will begin. Re-establishing road connectivity to the port lands is a top priority and teams are working to resolve this situation as soon as possible.
